Swap calculator

What holding a position overnight costs or earns, from the swap rate your broker publishes.

Negative is a charge, positive a credit.
Wednesday's rollover counts three nights at most brokers.
Total swap

In the quote currency
Rollovers charged
As a share of notional
Per month, if held (30 nights)

Where the swap rate comes from

The calculator does not know your broker's swap; nobody publishes them in one place, and they change without notice. Open the instrument's specification in your platform, where MetaTrader shows swap long and swap short, and type the figure for your direction. The swap comparison on this site collects the published rates of the brokers that disclose them.

How the units work

Brokers quote swaps four ways. MetaTrader shows points, where a point is the fifth decimal (or third for yen pairs) and the swap in quote currency is points times the point size times the contract size. Some brokers quote pips, ten times larger. Some quote the money amount per lot per night in the quote currency. And some quote an annual percentage of the position's notional value, divided by 360 or 365 for the nightly charge; the calculator uses 365. Whichever you choose, the result is converted into your account currency.

Why Wednesday counts three times

Spot forex settles two business days after the trade. A position held over Wednesday night rolls to a Monday value date, crossing the weekend, so the broker charges three nights of swap at Wednesday's rollover and none on Saturday or Sunday. The calculator counts rollovers from the day you open, so five nights from Monday includes one triple charge and the total is seven nights' worth. Most brokers follow this convention; a few charge the triple on Friday, and some instruments differ.

What it tells you

The per-month line is the number to compare with the trade's expected move. A carry that pays 5 dollars a night is 150 dollars a month on a standard lot, and a charge of the same size is what a position must beat before it is in profit. The cost of a trade paper in the research section works through the arithmetic.
